Our August birding ended with a surprisingly cool and cloudy day that made for less bird activity overall. However, there were some nice surprises. We began with Bushtit, Cedar Waxwing, Cooper’s Hawk and Merlin at Everett’s Legion Park. At the new Baywood Nature Trail below the park, we counted 14 Osprey. There also were a raft of Common Mergansers and several shorebird species, including Sanderling. Forest Park yielded a late Western Wood-Pewee, Brown Creeper and Red-breasted Nuthatch. Highlights at Howarth Park were a mixed flock that added Downy Woodpecker, Orange-crowned Warbler and Townsend’s Warbler to our count, plus a lunchtime visit from a Pileated Woodpecker. Our day ended with nice views of Golden-crowned Kinglets and Doug Resnick’s Barred Owl at the Narbeck Wetland Sanctuary.
