Presented by the Edmonds Mayors’ Climate Protection Committee, this is a series of audience engagement talks about climate change featuring speakers from WA State Dept of Ecology, University of Washington, Edmonds College, and the local community.
On Wednesday, October 16 at 6pm, Pilchuck Audubon President Bill Derry will be speaking on “Restoration of the Edmonds Marsh and Estuary Restoration and Climate Change.” Bill will explain the need to restore the Edmonds Marsh and its Estuary and how it relates to climate change. Dayton Avenue and Harbor Square now flood due to overflows from the marsh. This flooding will only get worse with climate change and sea level rise. Restoring the marsh and estuary will add flood storage and provide a berm to prevent flooding from the marsh to Dayton Avenue. Marsh restoration will also sequester carbon to help mitigate climate change. Restoration will also provide critical habitat for out-migrating juvenile salmon including endangered Chinook. We have received a NOAA coastal resiliency grant to begin the planning for restoration. Consultant work has just begun on this project.
