Christmas Bird Count with Pilchuck Audubon [online]

Join us for a presentation through the Sno-Isle Libraries!

Register to Attend via Zoom

Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count, or CBC for short, began on Christmas Day in 1900 as an alternative to the tradition at the time: a Christmas bird hunt. Instead of shooting them, enthusiasts began trying to count as many birds as possible. Fast forward 124 years later, we have an incredible dataset that scientists use to assess the health and trends of bird populations, and the nation's longest running community science project.

And here’s the best part: you can help us! Participating in the CBC is an excellent way for you to make a real contribution to bird conservation right where you live. Come learn more about the CBC and how you can sign up to help this year!

Class: The Raptors Among Us - Session #3

4-week online course (November 12, 19, 26, & December 3)

Instructor: Connie Sidles

Few observations in nature delight the soul more than the sight of a hawk or an eagle circling lazily in the sky. But looks can be deceptive. These are working birds, actively hunting for prey to chase down and eat. "Raptor" comes from the Latin word for "seize or plunder," and that is indeed what these magnificent hunters do. Washington is host to 20+ species of vultures, eagles, hawks, and falcons! Come let master birder Connie Sidles show you how to identify them all. Class is designed for advanced-beginner and intermediate birders.

The class will be recorded and registrants will have access to the recordings until December 24.

Registration: $45 for PAS members, $60 for non-PAS members

Class: Gulls of Washington - Field Trip

1-night online course (October 17)

Optional field trip add-on (October 19)

Instructor: David Droppers

Learning your gulls is like getting your flu shot - you don't want to but you know you should. They are daunting, but they are everywhere, and oh so entertaining. David Droppers will share the keys to identifying adult gulls (sorry, he's not so confident on his immatures, maybe a class in several years), and then, for those intrepid souls, venture out the following weekend to put what we've learned into practice. We will likely cruise from marina to marina, looking for wintering and migrating gulls. David will also share a tool he has developed to make identification a bit more methodical, taking much (but not all) of the pain out of the process. Learn your gulls - can't you hear them? They're laughing at you!

The class will be recorded and registrants will have access to the recording until November 7.

Monthly Program: Hummingbird Photography

In-person

Snohomish PUD Building, Commission Room

2320 California Street, Everett, WA 98201

Hummingbird Photography

Guest Speaker: Soo Baus

Last year, Soo Baus decided to set up a hummingbird haven with a birdbath and water fountain.

Her goal was to photograph the birds with minimal high tech photography gadgets. No remote control with multiple flashlights. Instead, she used natural morning and evening light. Eventually she switched from a solar to an electric-operated water fountain to ensure consistent fountain spray.

Through months of photographing, she has come to believe that anyone with a camera with a zoom function will be able to capture hummers. Her favorite shots include the birds bathing, playing, and drinking at the water fountain, and feasting on different flowers.

Soo will share how she planned her setup, her research on nectar flowers and collecting branches for perches, her photography tricks and tips, and her discovery of creative background compositions from her surroundings.

We hope to see everyone for this in-person presentation!

Swifts Night Out

Swifts Night Out in Monroe Returns September 7th!

Celebrate the magnificent migration of Monroe’s official bird, the Vaux’s Swift

We’re excited to once again be hosting the annual Swifts Night Out event in Monroe again on September 7th. From 4:30pm until dusk, nature lovers, community groups, families, and anyone with an interest in the spectacular can enjoy an evening on the lawn to watch the Vaux’s Swifts descend into their evening chimney roost at the school. While waiting for the swifts to appear around sunset, there will be children’s activities, vendor booths, and a presentation available in the Wagner Center Auditorium.

Vaux’s Swifts roost in hollowed out old growth trees; however, with fewer old growth trees available, they have taken to roosting in man-made chimneys. In 2007, Pilchuck, Seattle, and Eastside Audubon chapters worked together to save the old brick chimney at Frank Wagner Elementary School from demolition. The chimney is a critical migratory stopover for the swifts, hosting more than 20,000 swifts on its busiest nights. As a result, the chimney is designated as a globally Important Bird Area and the Vaux’s Swift is the official bird of Monroe.

Join us for this community celebration of one of nature’s most breathtaking migrations!

Support us by having dinner at the event!

The 911 Grub food truck will be serving hot dogs, cheeseburgers, loaded nachos, and street tacos during the event. Be sure to fill up, as they have offered to donate a portion of their sales to support our chapter’s work!

Thank you to our event sponsors!
