Trip Report: Port Townsend

March 14, 2023

This trip was rescheduled after a ferry problem in February. We enjoyed sunny skies, although there was a stiff breeze off the water during the morning. Hooded mergansers and an Anna’s Hummingbird entertained us at Port Ludlow. After watching Black Turnstones and Harlequin Ducks at Indian Island, we headed to Marrowstone Island and Fort Flagler. Highlights there were Black-bellied Plovers, Sanderlings, Brants, and Black Oystercatchers. At Point Wilson, hundreds of Rhinoceros Auklets gathered on the water, while Common Murres, Ancient Murrelets and Marbled Murrelets also moved through the channel. Overall, it was a nice day of birding.
