Birding: Sultan

Photo: American Dipper by Mick Thompson

Meet at the Monroe Park & Ride, 17422 Highway 2 (west of the fairgrounds). We’ll visit Osprey Park for a level two-mile walk through riparian habitat along the Sultan River, where salmon habitat restoration has produced many braided side channels and bridge crossings. Possible species include American Dipper and Spotted Sandpiper. From there it is a short drive to Mann Road/Vos Road along the Skykomish River. Possible species include nesting Western Kingbirds, as well as Lazuli Bunting, Yellow-breasted Chat and Eastern Kingbird. Pack a lunch — we’ll eat with bird feeders in view. If time allows, after lunch we’ll take a short drive to Lake Chaplain Road, where Virginia Rails are likely. Dusky Flycatcher was seen earlier in the spring.
