Trip Report: South Whidbey Island

Photo: Snow Bunting by Philip Dickinson

January 24, 2023

It was another chilly and damp winter’s day, but that did not get in the way of another good day of birding. Led by Wilma Bayes, we started at Crockett Lake and worked our way south. The Bird-of-the-Day came early, as everyone got great looks at a rare Snow Bunting across the road from Crockett. Another uncommon species was a White-throated Sparrow along the Deer Lagoon trail. Other notable birds were Varied Thrush (but no Robins), Harlequin Duck, Common and Pacific Loon, Eurasian Wigeon, Brant, Black-bellied Plover and many Dunlin. At Ewing Marsh we also watched two coyotes, which seemed drawn to the coyote sculpture there.
